The Top 100 Software Companies of 2022

The Software Report is pleased to announced its third annual list of the Top 100 Software Companies. This awards feature publication has become recognized as the leading source of information on the best companies in the software industry. Selection is based on a rigorous review of nomination feedback received, in addition to deep research into a company’s ratings on Glassdoor, G2, Capterra, and other publicly available information. The Software Report takes a holistic view, encompassing product quality, organizational effectiveness, management caliber, and ESG involvement, among other criteria.

This year’s awardees run the gamut from multinational giants with tens of thousands of employees founded as far back as the 1970s and 1980s, to well over a dozen companies that were founded within the last decade, some of which employ a few hundred. Regardless of their size or age, they are transforming the software industry in their respective categories while delivering incredible value to their customers. From cloud computing to data storage, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and workflow management, these are the companies to watch.

The following awardees were selected based on a comprehensive evaluation process, with particular focus placed this year on their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts. 1. Microsoft

Some of the most recent achievements by the Redmond-based innovator are its acquisitions of game company Activision Blizzard and speech recognition software maker Nuance Communications. Microsoft also continues to support digital education with its ongoing work to bring cutting-edge tech like Windows 11 SE to K–8 schools across the world.

 

2. Adobe

As one of the top software providers in the world, tech giant Adobe serves millions of users across the globe. Since its start in 1982, the company has primarily been known for its multimedia and creativity software offerings. Its popular products include Photoshop, Acrobat Reader, and Creative Cloud.

Since then, the company has found tremendous success by adapting to shifts in the market, leading the charge into the cloud and subscription-based business model. Propelled by these digital offerings, its revenue more than doubled between 2015 and 2019. More recently, Adobe achieved record quarterly revenue of $4.39 billion in the second quarter of its fiscal year 2022.

 

3. Twilio

Founded in 1990, Genesys is a private Silicon Valley-based software company that sells customer experience (CX) and call center technology to mid-sized and large businesses. Led by Chief Executive Officer Tony Bates, Genesys orchestrates more than 70 billion customer experiences for organizations in more than 100 countries. The company is driven by a workforce of more than 1,300 global professionals delivering innovative “Experience as a Service” solutions.

Genesys has grown over time through many acquisitions, including the 2021 purchase of the Bold360 suite of digital engagement software from LogMeIn. That same year, the company raised $580 million in funding, led by Salesforce Ventures, resulting in a valuation of $21 billion. The company holds empathy as one of its core business values, and plans to continue incorporating it into its digital transformation efforts.

 

5. Nutanix

Nutanix is one of the world’s great cloud computing companies, and is recognized as one of the best in the field when it comes to cloud services and software-defined storage. Founded 13 years ago by Dheeraj Pandey, Mohit Aron, and Ajeet Singh, Nutanix has empowered clients to optimize the efficiency of their systems. It has met with striking success in this mission, pivoting last year from hardware to subscription software and earning $1.4 billion in revenue in the process.

Led by new President and Chief Executive Officer Rajiv Ramaswami, Nutanix employs a team of more than 6,000 software experts (or “Nutants,” as they are affectionately known within the company). It has repeatedly been hailed as one of the best tech workplaces in the world by Fortune and The Washington Post, and was recently named a Gartner Peer Insights Customers’ Choice for hyperconverged infrastructure software and distributed files and object storage. Notable acquisitions in recent years have included Netsil, Minjar, and MainFrame2, enhancing the company’s cloud monitoring and application delivering capabilities.

 

6. MathWorks

Private mathematical computing software company MathWorks remains one of the top names in advanced computing and data analysis. The company has been behind some of the landmark evolutions in mathematical computing for decades, growing from MATLAB, a free software for academics created by Cleve Moler in the 1970s, into an eminently profitable software company with a team of more than 3,000 working in 16 countries and revenue approaching $1 billion.

9. Snowflake

Developed in 2012 and officially launched in 2014, Snowflake is a cloud-based data platform provided as a SaaS solution with a completely new SQL query engine. Its innovative architecture was natively designed for the cloud, meaning it can’t be run on-premises. To the user, Snowflake provides all of the functionality of an enterprise analytic database, along with many additional special features and unique capabilities. Initially built on top of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Snowflake is now available on Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.

The cloud database and management company has come a long way since its early days. In May 2019, Fran Slootman, the retired former CEO of ServiceNow, took the reins at Snowflake. That same year, the company was ranked first on the Forbes Cloud 100. In September 2020, Snowflake became a public company via an initial public offering (IPO) that raised $3.4 billion, one of the largest software IPOs in history. On May 26, 2021, the company announced that it would become headquarter-less, with a principal executive office located in Bozeman, Montana.

 

10. Zscaler

Launched 15 years ago, Zscaler is a cloud security company that offers a platform for businesses to securely transform their networks and applications for a mobile and cloud first world. The San Jose, California-based company, which was founded by Jay Chaudhry and Kailash Kailash, is well known in the industry for its innovative tech and currently has more than 275 issued and pending patents. In March 2018, the company raised $192 million after it began trading on the Nasdaq. The following year, Zscaler received the Stevie award as the Most Innovative Tech Company of the Year.

 

11. Pure Storage

12. UiPath

UiPath, which was founded by Romanian entrepreneurs Daniel Dines and Marius Tîrcă, is an elite class of B2B software that automates repetitive digital tasks normally performed by people. It serves banking, healthcare, financial services, and government entities. The technology combines emulating how humans read computer screens (AI computer vision) with APIs and gives users access to pre-built automation components that can be combined to automate routine processes.

UiPath was founded in 2005 and has since opened offices in London, Bangalore, Paris, Singapore, and Tokyo, among other locations. Having filed confidentially for an initial public offering in December 2020, UiPath became public on April 21, 2021 and raised $1.3 billion in one of the largest U.S. software IPOs in history. Previously, in 2020, UiPath was named the top tech company and #2 overall in the Financial Times FT1000 ranking of America’s fastest-growing companies. That same year, the company was ranked #3 on the Forbes Cloud 100 list for the second consecutive year.

 

13. GitHub

GitHub, a Microsoft subsidiary, is a provider of Internet hosting for software development and version control using the open-source Git platform. Founded in 2008 by a group of software developers and entrepreneurs, GitHub enables millions of developers and companies to build, ship, and maintain their software on the largest and most advanced development platform in the world. GitHub began as a bootstrapped business and in 2018 was acquired by Microsoft for $7.5 billion. The utility is free for students learning to write code and is generally available to all developers.

Driven by a workforce of more than 2,500 professionals, Dropbox has successfully shifted to a remote-first workplace in the wake of the pandemic. The company has also received countless awards and accolades, including landing on Fast Company’s 2022 “Top 10 Most Innovative Companies” list.

In August of that year, the company also wrapped up an eighth round of funding totaling $1.6 billion, making for an updated valuation of $38 billion. Two months later, it made its second acquisition with German no-code company 8080 Labs for its data exploration tool bamboolib.

In 2022, it was recognized by Comparably with three awards: Best Places to Work in Boston, Best Global Culture, and Best Company Outlook.

 

21. Toast

The original idea for Toast came from a group of friends who were frustrated with how long it can take to pay for one’s check at a restaurant or bar. To solve this problem, the company founders—Steve Fredette, Aman Narang, and Jonathan Grimm—created a smartphone app that gives customers a way to start a tab at the restaurant and link a credit card. Launched in 2012, Toast now allows for mobile payments, customer loyalty programs, promotions, and social aspects, which are all integrated with restaurants’ existing POS systems. Today, the cloud-based restaurant management platform is used in approximately 62,000 restaurants, from small cafes to nationwide enterprises.

Always looking ahead, Toast’s most recent updates include server-started ordering and a customizable digital menu by service area. In September 2021, after several rounds of funding and a nearly $5 billion valuation, the company went public. At the time, its market capitalization was roughly $20 billion, making it one of 2021’s largest U.S. IPOs. Adding to this success, in 2022 Toast opened a new office in Dublin, Ireland and announced that it had acquired Sling, a communication and management solution.

Box, which develops and markets cloud-based content management, collaboration, and file sharing tools for businesses, was founded in 2005 by Aaron Levie and Dylan Smith. Its initial focus was on consumers, but it pivoted to a business user focus around a decade ago. The company developed features to embed Box in common business applications or use APIs to integrate with them. In 2011, a reworked version of the Box service was introduced with technical improvements meant to help handle large numbers of business users. It also featured changes to the user interface and additional collaboration features. With its acquisition of LLamasoft in 2020, the company added AI-powered supply chain design to its platform. In 2021, the company also brought configurations to its BSM platform, embedding ESG in an effort to optimize supply chains and reduce overall CO2 emission.
