Many people who are into photography must have come across certain photos wherein the eyes of the subject appear red. This not only is an annoying effect but it ruins the photo as well. So lets get into a little detail and know what this effect is all about.

Red Eye Effect:
Let us first understand why red eyes appear in a photo. This effect appears mainly due to the flash installed in the cameras. Some of the outdated cams do not use the Red Eye Reduction Technique. In such cams, the flash hits just once i.e. when the picture is being taken. In this case, the light from the flash enters the eyes of the subject and is reflected back from the retina. This is exactly the same time when the pic is being taken by the cam. The reflected light appears red due to the presence of Red Blood Corpuscles in the eye. Thus the eyes appear red in the image.
Red Eye Reduction Technique:
The solution for this is as simple as its cause. To avoid red eye effect now a days almost all digicams use the Red Eye Reduction Technique. The technique is quite simple and the flash in such case hits twice i.e. once just before the picture is taken and then the next one while the picture is being taken. In this case, when the first lite flashes, the pupil of the subjects eye tend to contract, thus blocking the path of the light towards the retina. The next light is flashed after a sufficient interval of time. The pupils converge by the time the next flash hits. This prevents the light from reflecting from the retina and thus avoids the Red Eye Effect.
Simple as it may appear but this technique is mandatory for producing good quality and Usable images. Even the cameras in the cellphones now-a-days are using this technique.
